Immersive Gilded Age adventure at the Hermitage

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – This week guests will enter a world “where all that glitters truly is gold” at the Hermitage Museum & Gardens.

This year’s 8th annual immersive theatre series by Patrick Mullins is titled “POSSES$ION“. It begins with a preview on Thursday, February 29. Opening night is Friday, March 1.

Guests will enter in to a “realm of enchantment” in the Gilded Age adventure, taking a journey through the fantastical realm of Midas.

The core story is that of King Midas. It also delves into art, what is art and who buys art.

According to the Hermitage, “Become a participant in this interactive journey as you create your own art, collect coins, or cast spells of divination to determine what possessions matter most”. The evening will leave guests “possessed”.

“I think it’s fun and a little bit wacky, but also thoughtful,” Mullins said.

The show will features an all-star cast, art installations and music. Art installations are by Asa Jackson and Ryan Lytle. Music is by Otis Brooks and Delona Bean.

Last year’s show was titled “The House That Jack Built” and led guests through an enchanted creation inside the Hermitage.

It all started nine years ago when Mullins pitched and created his first immersive theater production. It’s been a hit ever since, attracting guests and selling out each year.

“I love traditional proscenium theater, but there’s something about when you step outside of that box and what happens,” Mullins said.

Every guest has a different experience and perspective throughout the performance. Some people choose to follow around characters, while some walk around, like an art installation. Some choose to do a bit of both.

Along with actors, the house is also a character in the show, maybe one of the most important.

“And, it has so many beautiful rooms and so much history,” Mullins said.

Guests will play a more active role in this year’s production compared to previous shows.

“The whole evening is kind of gamified,” Mullins said.

Guests will have their own objective and goals to reach while also watching the show and piecing it together.

It ultimately will leave guests asking themselves questions as they leave.

“You’re going to get an experience that leaves gives you a lot to think about,” Mullins said.

Guests will be asked to take an aptitude assessment before entering the show. The link will be sent in the purchase confirmation email. Click here for further instructions.
