PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Independence Day holiday falls on a Thursday this year. As a result, many city buildings will be closed both on Thursday and Friday. We’ve compiled a list below. We’ll continue to update this list as we receive information from additional localities.

Virginia

Hampton Roads Transit

HRT buses will operate Saturday Service, Light Rail will operate Saturday Service, and Ferry will operate Regular Service on Thursday, July 4, 2024. The Customer Service Call Center, transit center information booths and public access to all administrative facilities (ID badge, Lost & Found, etc.) will be closed.  For more information, visit gohrt.com or call 757-222-6100. 

Chesapeake

In observance of the upcoming Independence Day holiday, all City offices, community centers, courts, and libraries will be CLOSED on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5. The Visitor Center will be OPEN from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.

Trash collections will be moved back one day during the holiday week, as follows:

Thursday, July 4 collections made on Friday, July 5

Friday, July 5 collections made on Saturday, July 6

Normal operating schedules will resume on Monday, July 8. Residents who need more information should call the Customer Contact Center at 382-CITY between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays or log on to CityOfChesapeake.net 24 hours a day.

Hampton

All city offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday, and on Friday, July 5, for an administrative day.

No garbage collection on Thursday, July 4. Those Thursday collections will be made a day early, on Wednesday, July 3.

No street sweeping on Thursday and Friday, July 4-5. Thursday’s scheduled sweeping will be done on Friday, July 7.

Libraries in Hampton are closed both Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.

Community and neighborhood centers will be closed on Thursday for the holiday, but will reopen on Friday, July 5 for summer camp and scheduled rentals only.

The Fort Monroe Pool will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 4-5.

DMV Select will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 4-5.

Newport News

City offices and libraries will be closed in Newport News on both Thursday, July 4, 2024 and Friday, July 5, 2024.

Norfolk

City offices and all Parks & Recreation facilities will be closed in observance of the Independence Day holiday on Thursday, July 4. We are awaiting additional details regarding specific closures.

Suffolk

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, Suffolk City offices will be closed Thursday, July 4, 2024. Normal operations will resume Friday, July 5, 2024 at 8:30 a.m. The City observes all state-designated holidays. Independence Day is considered a holiday for the Commonwealth of Virginia and all State offices are closed on this day.

Suffolk Public Works Department will operate on a one-day delay starting on Thursday, July 4. TFC Recycling will also operate on a one-day delay starting on Thursday, July 4. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 am on the day of collection. The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk and the Regional Landfill will be closed on Thursday, July 4.

Suffolk Transit will not operate on Thursday, July 4.

Suffolk Parks & Recreation Joint Use Recreation Centers (Kings Fork, Creekside, Northern Shores, Oakland, Booker T. Washington, Mack Benn, Jr.) will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and reopen at 6am on Friday, July 5. The East Suffolk Recreation Center, Curtis Milteer Recreation Center and Bennett’s Creek

Recreation Center will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and reopen at 6am on Friday, July 5. The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administration Office will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and reopen at 8:30am on Friday, July 5.

Suffolk’s four major parks (Lone Star Lakes, Lake Meade, Sleepy Hole, Bennett’s Creek) will remain open Thursday, July 4. However, no park attendant will be on duty.

The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and reopen at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 5.

All Suffolk City Libraries (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk, Chuckatuck) will be closed on Thursday, July 4 for the Independence Day Holiday. Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk Libraries will reopen at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 5 while the Chuckatuck Library will reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 8.

The Suffolk Visitor Center will be open Thursday, July 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will be closed until further notice for major repairs.

The Suffolk Executive Airport terminal will be open Thursday, July 4. The airfield, self-service fuel island, and restaurant will remain open Thursday, July 4.

The Suffolk Circuit Court Clerk’s Office and Circuit Court will be closed Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.

Virginia Beach

The following Virginia Beach facilities will be closed Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday with some additional changes noted below: 

  • All Virginia Beach government administrative offices  
  • All Virginia Beach community recreation centers (Recreation centers open July 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) 
  • All Virginia Beach public libraries including the TCC/City of Virginia Beach Joint-Use Library
  • Commonwealth’s Attorney Office  
  • Sandler Center for the Performing Arts box office and administrative offices (Box office open July 5.) 
  • The Bruce W. Edwards VBEMS Headquarters and Training Center  
  • Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts and Clerk’s Offices  
  • Virginia Beach Convention Center administrative offices 
  • Virginia Beach Department of Public Health  
  • Virginia Beach History Museums 
  • Voter Registration & Elections Office 
  • Waste Management administrative offices, the Landfill and Resource Recovery Center and the West Neck Recycling Center 

The following facilities will be open to the public July 4-5: 

  • All Virginia Beach city parksand park facilities are open regular hours including the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp & Beach Facility 
  • EMS lifeguard stands at the Oceanfront (1st to 42nd streets), the North End, Croatan, Sandbridge and Little Island Park: Staffed 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. then continue with active beach patrolling until sunset; EMS field operations and marine response in service 
  • Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advanced tickets available for purchase at tickets.virginiaaquarium.com  
  • Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center: Noon to 5 p.m. 
  • Virginia Beach Convention Center: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for events 
  • Virginia Beach Farmers Market will be open. Visit virginiabeach.gov/farmersmarket for individual merchant’s store hours. (The Farmers Market Management Office will be closed July 4-5.) 
  • Visitor Information Center at Chesapeake Bay Center: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 
  • Visitor Information Center at Parks Avenue: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Visitor Information Center Kiosks 17th Street & 24th Street at the Oceanfront: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Residents who normally receive waste collection (trash, recycling, yard waste, bulky item) on Thursdays will instead have their cans serviced on Saturday, July 6. Friday collection for July 5 will remain the same. 

North Carolina

Manteo

For a 4th of July celebration, several roads in the town of Manteo will be closed.

Portions of Queen Elizabeth Avenue and Fernando Street will be closed from Wednesday, July 3 at 10 p.m. to Thursday, July 4 at midnight.

The Weather Tower Parking Lot and parking along Fernando Street will also be closed from Tuesday, July 2 at 10 p.m. to Thursday, July 4 at midnight.
