HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – With the holiday season around the corner, select city services will be closing early or closed altogether for Christmas and New Year’s.

The list below reflects closures throughout Hampton Roads.

Chesapeake

  • City Offices, libraries and community centers will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Chesapeake Courts will close at noon on Dec. 23 and will be closed all day on Dec. 24 and 25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • The Chesapeake Circuit Clerk’s office will be closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • DMV Select will be closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • No trash or recycling collection on Dec. 25. That collection will occur on Dec. 26 instead. There will be no collection on Jan. 1. That collection will occur on Jan. 2.
  • The Chesapeake Visitor’s Center will close on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • City facilities will return to their COVID-19 operating schedules on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Hampton

  • Most City Offices and services will be closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 as well as Jan. 1.
  • Hampton City Schools’ Christmas break runs from Monday, Dec. 21 until Friday, Jan. 1.
  • There will be no regular recycling, refuse, bulk trash or yard waste collection on Friday, Dec. 25 or Friday Jan. 1. Trash normally collected Dec. 25 will be collected Wednesday, Dec. 23. Trash normally collected Jan. 1 will be collected Wednesday, Dec. 30.
  • The City Landfill will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • The Yard Waste Site will be closed Dec. 25 and 26 and again on Jan. 1 and 2.
  • Libraries will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Hampton Courts will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 for Christmas and Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.
  • The Health Dept. and Clinics and Social Services will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 for Christmas and Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.
  • Golf Courses will close at 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and remain closed all day Dec. 25. Open regular hours on New Year’s Day.
  • Wilson Fishing Pier is currently open 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily, but will close on Christmas Eve at 6:30 p.m. Closed on Christmas. Reopens Dec. 26 at 7 a.m. Closes at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31, and then will remain closed until Spring 2021.
  • Bluebird Gap Farm closed Dec. 24 and 25 and Friday, Jan. 1.
  • Sandy Bottom Nature Park will be closed on Dec. 25.
  • The History Museum offices will be closed on Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1. The Visitor Center and Museum will remain open until 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Gosnold’s Hope Park remains open, but offices will closed on Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1.
  • All Hampton community center remain closed until further notice.
  • Air Power Park will be closed on Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Carousel Park is closed until further notice due to COVID-19.
  • Buckroe Beack Park will remain open. The public restrooms will remain open Dec. 24 but will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Park closing time is 5 p.m. through Jan. 31, 2020.

Isle of Wight

  • County offices are closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • All recycling sites close at 4 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
  • All recycling sites will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter is closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Newport News

  • City Offices and libraries will be closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 as well as Jan. 1.
  • Newport News Circuit Court and the Clerk’s Office will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Garbage, recycling, and bulk waste collections will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, but there is no change in the collection schedule for the week of Dec. 21 or the week of Dec. 28.
  • Recovery Operations Center (landfill) will be closed Thursday, Dec. 24 through Saturday, Dec. 26. The landfill will also be closed on Jan. 1 and Jan 2.
  • Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter will be open noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24 for adoptions and closed on Dec. 25 and Jan 1. The reunite lobby is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for surrenders, reclaims and stray drop offs.

Norfolk

  • City offices are closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Norfolk Criminal Justice Services is closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25.
  • Trash collection will resume as scheduled on Dec. 24. Trash will not be collected on Dec. 25. Friday’s collection will happen on Saturday, Dec. 26. Requests for bulk waste collection on Thursday, December 24 and Saturday, December 26 must be made before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23. 
  • Trash will not be collected on Jan. 1. Friday’s collection will happen on Saturday, Jan. 2. Requests for bulk for Saturday, January 2 must be made before 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 31.
  • The Norfolk Courthouse will be closed Thursday, Dec. 31 and Friday, Jan. 1.  Only the Circuit Court Clerk’s office and Marriage Commissioner Office will be open Dec. 31.

Portsmouth

  • City offices are closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Circuit Courts will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • No trash, recycling, or bulk collections on Dec. 25, or Jan. 1. Dec. 25 routes will be collected in advance on Wednesday, Dec. 23. Jan. 1 routes will be collected Wednesday, Dec. 30.
  • Curbside library service will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Museums are already closed due to COVID-19.
  • The High Street Visitor Center Kiosk will be open with special hours:
    • Week of Dec. 21-27: Monday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.| Tuesday: Closed | Wednesday: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Thursday (Christmas Eve): 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Friday (Christmas Day): Closed | Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.| Sunday: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

  • Bide-A-Wee Golf Course, 1 Bide-A-Wee Lane, will be open on Christmas Eve at 7 a.m.

Suffolk

  • City offices are closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Suffolk Transit will operate as scheduled on Dec. 24 and there will be no bus service Dec. 25.
  • Suffolk Public Libraries will be closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25. Offices will also be closed Jan. 1 and Jan. 2.

Virginia Beach

  • Most city of Virginia Beach offices and facilities will be closed Dec. 24, and 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Administrative offices are closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25.
  • All city community recreation centers
    • Dec. 24 — Close at noon
    • Dec. 25 — Closed
    • Dec. 31 — Close at 5 p.m.
    • Jan. 1 — Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • All city parks and park facilities
    • Dec. 24 — Close at noon
    • Dec. 25 — Closed
    • Dec. 31 — Close at 5 p.m.
    • Jan. 1 — Close at 5:30 p.m.
  • City libraries will be closed Dec. 24-26 and Jan. 1 and will close at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.
  • Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center
    • Dec. 23-24 — Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Dec. 25 — Closed
    • Dec. 26 – Jan. 2 — Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center
    • Dec. 23 — Open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Dec. 24 — Open noon to 7 p.m.
    • Dec. 25 — Closed
    • Jan. 1 — Closed
  • Virginia Beach Farmers Market closes at noon on Dec. 24 and will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Dec. 25 — No trash/recycling collection. These services will be completed on Dec. 28 instead.
  • Jan. 1 — No trash/recycling collection. These services will be completed on Jan. 4. instead.
  • VB Landfill and Resource Recovery Center will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25, and Jan. 1.
  • West Neck Recycling Center will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Waste Management Office will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Deadline for Bulky Item Collection Request, for the week of Dec. 21-25, will be noon on Dec. 23.

Williamsburg

  • All Williamsburg city offices will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street.
  • Waller Mill Park will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
  • Trash, recycling and leaf collections will not be affected.

Additional Closures

DMV Offices

All Virginia DMV offices are closed Thursday, Dec. 24, Friday, Dec. 25 and Friday, Jan. 1.

Hampton Roads Transit

  • On Dec. 24, all services (bus, light rail, ferry, and paratransit) will operate on a regular schedule.
  • On Dec. 25, and Jan. 1, the bus, light rail, and paratransit will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • On Dec. 25, the MAX Route 960 and the ferry will not operate.
  • Administrative facilities will be closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25.
  • The Customer Service Call Center and all transit center info booths except Silverleaf will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 and be closed on Dec. 25.
  • Silverleaf will operate in accordance with its regular schedule.

Post Office

  • Some locations may have extended hours leading up to the holidays, while others may have limited hours on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. Check with your local office.
  • All offices will be closed on Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.
  • All locations will be open after the holidays, and regular mail delivery will resume on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.
  • While there are not any plans for limited hours on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31, customers should check with their local Post Office for hours of operation.
