Endangered ape born at the Virginia Zoo

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk has announced the birth of an endangered ape.

A siamang was born on March 15 to mother Malana and father Bali. The birth is the result of a breeding recommendation from the Siamang Species Survival Plan, which coordinates population management for the species. This is the fourth siamang birth at the zoo.

The entire family can now be seen in their dayroom on the Zoo’s Asia: Trail of the Tiger.

“The birth of any endangered species is always a cause for celebration,” Emily Smicker, Director of Communications at the Virginia Zoo, said. “We are thrilled to see the group bonding and supporting each other, and we feel privileged to have a front row seat as this baby grows into an energetic young siamang.”

The zoo has not been able to determine the gender of the baby just yet, but said an update will be coming soon on Virginia Zoo social media pages.
