PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – In the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach sits
False Cape State Park. Long before it became a state park, a community of nearly 300 people lived on this fragile piece of land at an outpost known as Wash Woods. According to legend, this hidden hamlet started from shipwrecked sailors back in the 1850’s. Strict hunting laws and severe storms drove the last of these hearty souls from Wash Woods by the 1930’s. All that remains today is a church steeple, a cemetery and a few good ghost stories.
