PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Lauren Weiland is a local military spouse and life-long ice hockey player. She’s on a mission to get more girls and women involved in the sport. Learn more about her love of the game and why she wants you to step on the ice in this week’s I Am Hampton Roads.

There’s a great opportunity for girls ages four to nine to play hockey at no cost as a part of the second annual DMV Girls Try Hockey for Free Day. It’s happening Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at Iceland Family Skating Center in Virginia Beach. All required hockey equipment will also be provided at no cost, and no experience is necessary.

For more information on the DMV’s Girls Try Hockey for Free Day and to register, visit the Youth Hockey Development’s website here.
