NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – In celebration of Earth Day, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is offering free fares — and more!
HRT Celebrates Earth Day with Free Fares, Bus Stop Cleanups and Community Outreach
NORFOLK, VA – With free fares on April 22, eight days of bus stop cleanups, and ways to save you gas, time and money, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) and its TRAFFIX program are making it easy to give Mother Earth some love this Earth Day.
Free Fare Day
Free fare day falls on Monday, April 22 this year. No one will have to pay to ride the bus, light rail, ferry and paratransit services that day. Plan your trip at www.gohrt.com.
Did you know the average driver spends about $9,000 each year on their car. That includes payments, insurance, maintenance and gas.
HRT wants you to consider riding transit instead.
“Going fare-free to celebrate Earth Day is an opportunity to thank our riders while encouraging new riders to leave their vehicles behind and try transit,” said William E. Harrell, President and CEO. “HRT is also working with our community partners to keep our bus stops clean.”
Bus Stop Cleanups
In addition to free fare day, HRT also has volunteer opportunities for Earth Day.
From April 15-22, community members and organizations are encouraged to sign up to spend one hour cleaning up around bus stops.
Sign up in advance at this link: https://gohrt.com/earthday/clean-up-form/. You can choose your bus stop location or HRT can assign you one in your city.
Adopt-a-Stop
HRT also offers its Adopt-a-Stop program to help maintain nearly 2,800 transit stops. It’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact.
Participants in the Adopt-a-Stop program agree to pick up and dispose of litter and report issues such as graffiti or broken signage and shelters. HRT provides adopters with supplies, including trash containers, safety vests, trash bags and rubber gloves.
For details or to adopt a spot, visit www.gohrt.com/programs/adopt-a-stop or call 757-222-6100.
