PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Roads was treated to a picture perfect day for the April 8 solar eclipse.

Those able to step outside and take a safe look at the phenomenon did so locally on a beautiful afternoon, under mostly blue skies and a temperature of 70 degrees.

The rare celestial event was visible in our region from 2 p.m. until about 4:30 p.m., with the peak happening around 3:20 p.m. It was a partial eclipse here, with about 80% eclipse coverage.

From selfies in solar eclipse glasses, to images of the eclipse itself, this was a major photo op event, when done with proper safety precautions, of course.
