Clear the Shelters: Help Rocket, Bubby and many more animals find forever homes

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Week four of Clear the Shelters 2024 is here. There’s still time to join the cause in finding forever homes for dozens of animals in need in Hampton Roads.

Many local shelters have taken part in the months-long adoption event, which 10 On Your Side has been spotlighting throughout the campaign. This week, we’re featuring the Portsmouth Humane Society. It’s the oldest Humane Society in the state of Virginia. The shelter has participated in the campaign since it started 10 years ago.

Portsmouth Humane Society Executive Director Dyanna Uchiek said Clear the Shelters has helped them spread awareness on pet adoptions and push programs to the forefront of the community. Like many area shelters, the capacity is constantly fluctuating. Currently, there are around 250 animals available under the shelter’s care.

“It always brings higher traffic to our organizations in a time where we’re really struggling,” said Uchiek. “Summer has us at the highest intake of our year.”

The shelter has partnered with the City of Portsmouth for more than four decades; those meaningful contributions help make additional pet care services possible. While Portsmouth Humane is not offering any adoption specials for Clear the Shelters specifically this year, a BOGO deal is available for cats.

That deal would apply to this sweet, brown Tabby Cat, for example. His name is Rocket and he’s a ball of fun.

If you’re looking for a packaged deal, then this cute pair of sisters may be for you. Meet American Shelter dogs, Mara Jayde and Kimber. They’re not blood relatives but are from the same household. Mara Jayde and Kimber were brought to Portsmouth Humane in February after their owner was no longer able to care for them.

“One of them is sweet and laid back and older,” said Uchiek. “She’s around 8 years old and then the other is younger. She’s more playful and outgoing. I think if somebody was open to two dogs, these would be very complementary to a home.”

And then, there’s Bubby, the 1-year-old Beagle. He’s new to the shelter and hopeful for a home.

Clear the Shelters runs until Sept. 10.

To adopt any of these adorable animals, you can visit Portsmouth Humane Society (4022 Seaboard Ct, Portsmouth, VA 23701) Monday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The shelter is closed on Tuesdays.
