Clear the Shelters 2024: How to participate locally

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Clear the Shelters, the country’s largest single-day adoption event, is back for its 10th year!

WAVY is proud to be participating in this nationwide initiative again in 2024. NBC affiliated stations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico are partnering with their local animal shelters and rescues to promote pet adoptions and raise desperately needed funds.

Since it started ten years ago, NBC, Telemundo and our local communities have helped more than one million pets find their forever families.

This year’s Clear the Shelters event begins Aug. 10 and runs through Sept. 10.

Are you ready to find your new best friend?

If you want to help but can’t adopt, your donations can go a long way. The Clear the Shelters Fund benefits participating shelters. You can donate to the shelter or rescue of your choice. Greater Good Charities, a global nonprofit, is leading the campaign fundraising. Hill’s Pet Nutrition is also going to award weekly prize funds to registered shelters and rescues, meaning your donation could end up giving even more to the organization you choose.

WAVY personalities will be out live at area shelters on the following dates:

Look for their live coverage between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on WAVY TV 10 on the above dates.

Tune in to the Hampton Roads Show on Friday, Aug. 16 for a special Clear the Shelters show. We’ll feature area pets available for adoption.
