Yesterday’s heat was about as rough as expected. High temps had made it into the mid 90s as expected with low-mid 90s also in many locations.

High Temps Yesterday

Today we are still going to be dealing with a lot of heat and humidity. Ironically, there is a cool front on our doorstep just to the north.

Regional Weather Map

The problem is that the front has almost stalled out. It is very slow-moving. It will work its way into the area, but it will make for a tricky forecast today. I’m pretty confident that it will cool down the Eastern Shore. So their high temperatures will probably be in the 80s. I also expect some cities in the metro area to cool down a bit. Here is one model’s forecast for Norfolk today.

Temperature Forecast (Norfolk)

Our Future Trak model is showing something similar.

Forecast Temps This Afternoon (Future Trak)

I’m on board with this scenario. I think we’ll make it to the low-mid 90s this afternoon before the cool down. However, inland locations will stay hot all day. High temps out there will likely reach the mid 90s. Heat indices will follow a similar trend.

Heat Index Forecast

We’ll be mostly to partly sunny through midday. There will be an upper level haze from some of the smoke from far away wildfires in the west. However, the surface should be fine. As we get into the afternoon a few showers and storms will pop along the front.

Future Trak This Afternoon

These will probably push out a few outflow boundaries as we go into the late afternoon and early evening. I believe that will produce a few more scattered thunderstorms through that time.

Tomorrow the front should sink a little more to the south. We will all cool down compared to today. High temps will be in the 80s.

Forecast Temps Tomorrow

We’ll have more clouds overall, and there will be scattered rain showers. There will be a few storms in the afternoon. Some of those could produce brief heavy rain and gusty winds.

Future Trak Friday Afternoon

For now I think the odds are better for getting that rain over the Southside and northeast North Carolina. We’ll see. Due to the weak winds that is not a guarantee as the front could wiggle or stay more to the south.

By Saturday the front should move back north as a warm front. We’ll heat up again to the upper 80s. It will feel like the 90s with the heat index.

Temps VS Heat Index

For now I only have some isolated showers or storm in the area. Otherwise, we’ll be partly cloudy.

By Sunday we’ll heat up a little more. High temps will be near 90. The heat index will be in the upper 90s. There will be some scattered t’storms in the afternoon. We’ll stay muggy through that time.

Muggy Meter

A stronger cold front will move into the region on Monday. We’ll have scattered showers and a few storms for the first half of the day, but I think (and hope) that we’ll dry out later in the day. High temps will be in the low 80s. Then some nice Fall-like weather will return by Tuesday. High temps will drop to the 70s. Humidity will drop then too.

In the tropics things are starting to pick up a bit. There is a tropical disturbance in the middle of the Atlantic, and it is moving west. It has a medium chance of formation over the next few days.

Tropical Weather Outlook

We’ll keep an eye on it.
