Blog: Lots of sun and dry air this weekend!

Today we are wrapping up the month of May. It was a warm and wet month overall. We ended up about 1.8 degrees above average.

High Temps

This was with 2 long warm streaks and two smaller cool streaks. Yesterday, we had high temps in the 70s. We’ll be in the 70s again today. More on that in a moment.


Last night we did have a large pocket of rain showers that swiped through the region. In fact, there was some brief heavy rain late last night in some spots.

I was a bit surprised as there was some pretty dry air at the surface. However, the upper level low was pretty potent. It actually put down a decent amount of rain in a few places. It was almost 0.4″ in Virginia Beach.

24 Hour Rainfall

Norfolk picked up about 2 tenths of an inch. Norfolk is the main climate site that we use for the region. We are now over 1.8″ above average for rainfall for the month.

The rain has moved out, and now we have smooth sailing for the weekend.

A cold front is sliding farther offshore. The upper level low is sliding out to sea. Also, high pressure is coming from the west.

We’ll have a lot of sunshine today. It will feel great as much drier air is pushing into the region.

Dew Points

Dew points have dropped into the 40s. That is some very dry air for this time of year. High temps will rise to the low-mid 70s this afternoon.

Forecast Temps Today

We’ll have a northeast breeze running at 10-15mph with a few higher gusts near the shore. It may be a bit cool at the beaches today. Luckily the water temps have warmed to near 70 degrees.

Overnight we’ll have clear skies, light winds, and dry air. So low temps will drop down to the 50s There may even be a few upper 40s inland. However, tomorrow the super dry air and some strong sunshine will allow temps to rebound into the low 80s.

Winds will be lighter and variable. The air will stay very dry through tomorrow and tomorrow night.

However, the humidity and clouds will increase on Sunday. In fact there may be a few showers by Sunday evening. Check back for updates on the timing of that rain. High temps will be in the mid 80s.

Following the nice weekend we’ll have some more scattered rain showers early next week. High temps will stay in the 80s.
