Blog: Cool start to the week, but temps warm up soon

This morning we had some cold temperatures north and northwest of the metro area. There were Frost Advisories up for some of those locations until 9am. Temps had dropped down to the 30s there. There were even a couple of 30s briefly in the metro.

Low Temps This Morning

We are looking at another cool and dry day today. High pressure is over the region with a stationary front far to our north and south.

Regional Weather Map

We’ll have lots of sunshine today. The breeze won’t be too strong, but it will be out of the northeast. So high temps will land in the mid 60s this afternoon.

Forecast Temps Today

It will be nice in the sun, but a bit chilly in the shade. We’ll stay dry through tomorrow, but there may be a few more clouds on Tuesday. We’ll have a light east/northeast breeze, but we should be able to warm up a little more. So high temps will rise to the low 70s.

Forecast Temps Tomorrow

While we will warm things up here, we won’t be nearly as warm as areas to our west. Look at the Midwest temps. Those are a little unusual for late October, and some records may be broken between there and the Deep South.

While we’ll be very dry over the next couple of days, the humidity will build up a bit later this week. Temps will also be unseasonably warm. Dew points will rise up to near 60 with temps lifting into the upper 70s.

This will make it feel like it’s the end of Summer or the beginning of Fall when you compare it to the average. This will impact the Halloween Holiday. As of right now, I have temps in the upper 70s to near 80 during the afternoon with temps in the low 70s during the evening.

Halloween Weather

We’ll stay mild on Friday, but we should cool down on Saturday. The only chance of rain that I see is a low chance (20-30%) late Friday into very early Saturday morning. Hopefully, I’m wrong and it turns into a downpour. (I said it).

Meanwhile, there may be something brewing and stewing in the tropics. A weak disturbance is currently sitting over the western Caribbean. It has a medium chance of formation over the next few days as it drifts north.

Tropical Outlook

The problem is that the water temps are still very warm down there.

So there is a decent potential for that system to organize and strengthen. We’ll monitor its progress over the next few days.

A very weak tropical system could be a good thing for parts of the country right now. Look at how dry the entire country is.

U.S. Drought Monitor

This is probably the most coverage on that map that I’ve seen over the last 20 years. Granted there have been much more extreme droughts over the Deep South and the West over the last decade. Locally, we are now in the first tier “Abnormally Dry”.

U.S. Drought Monitor

I would suspect that some local areas will be in a moderate drought in the next update later this week. We have barely had any rain this month, and we are still the 3rd driest October on record.
