Who Would Have Thought

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY)– The Last few months have been extraordinary. Every day I come into my internship, I look forward to having new experiences. I love that the show is unpredictable, and I always wonder what to expect from one show to the next. The beauty of working on the Hampton Road Show is that the atmosphere keeps me on my toes.

What I’ve realized about working at a TV network is that you must be equipped with the skills necessary to deal with unexpected occurrences, whether it be a mic that goes out on set, or an error in the teleprompter. As they say, the show must go on.

I’ve had the opportunity to shadow the lovely reporter Keagan Hughes and get the behind-the-scenes scope of a news reporter’s duties when being sent out to cover a story. Reporters often have to write scripts, research, interview, edit and report live. Reporters do a lot more than I expected.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the News Room lately. I enjoy writing and have begun utilizing the skills I’ve picked up from Senior Producer Bob Bennett and Producer at the Hampton Roads Show Deborah Martinelli, who has set aside time to mentor me throughout my internship. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to officially meet the President of the university I currently attend, Norfolk State. This internship was crucial for me to meet Dr. Adams-Gaston upon graduation. I am thankful for all the connections I have made thus far at WAVY-TV 10, and I look forward to connecting with more people in the future.
