PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Falling in love with WAVY-TV 10 as an intern has been a blessing and a curse. It’s been amazing to learn from the reporters and anchors that I’ve watched on TV my whole life. Not only that, but to see how all the different departments and behind the scenes jobs connect to make WAVY “wave.” The kind and welcoming atmosphere makes it so hard to say goodbye.

This week, I ventured to promotions and engineering. My biggest regret of this internship is not talking to all these amazing people sooner. I really enjoyed our conversations about their jobs and general career advice.

Promotions taught me about thinking outside the box while using our resources. I had a casual talk with engineering about how they got involved in this field and why they love WAVY.

I also did some anchoring practice this week. It wasn’t live, but I was definitely nervous just to sit at that desk. I’ve never anchored before or talked that much (surprisingly). Lots of the anchors offered me tips and advice.

I ended up doing an anchor/reporter reel, which was really cool. My supervisor, Bob, put together a mock A-Block of hard news stories. I did well reading-wise, however I struggled on my facial expressions. It’s hard to make bold facial expressions when you’re talking about serious news stories.

The weather intern and I did a little collaboration piece too. When I was anchoring, I tossed to him for the weather segment. It involved some cross talk and ad-libing. It was fun to work with another intern.

I edited together my best stand-ups, PKGs and anchoring to make an anchor/reporter reel. It was cool to see all my work come together. It was crazy to look back and see the stand-ups I did at the beginning of the summer compared to the stuff I’ve done more recently. I feel like there was a major shift in my confidence.
