Blog 1: On the road to greatness

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – My name is Zion Hollins-Drew. I am a mass communications senior at the illustrious Norfolk State University.

To be one of two students accepted to work at WAVY-TV 10 for fall 2024, is an honor that I don’t intend to take lightly. Especially considering that Norfolk State University students have not had the opportunity to work at the station for over a few years.

I am beyond grateful to have been considered and selected to work on The Hampton Roads Show and prove that I have what it takes to thrive in this Industry. Leading up to my acceptance, I’d been preparing and seeking guidance from Ms. Saddanathan, the associate director of Student Pathways and Academic Formation. She showed me what it means to sell myself on paper and what strategies I could use to highlight my skills and experiences, emphasize my strengths and, more importantly, secure the internship!

Orientation day was finally upon me the weekend of Aug. 31. What a day it was! I am incredibly thrilled to be at the station. I’d been preparing my outfit for a week in advance. I wore a black blazer and brown pants made of corduroy fabric, paired with my black and gold chained Steve Madden loafers. I was ready to take on the day! What an exciting feeling it was to arrive at WAVY-TV 10! I was instantly greeted at the front lobby with a welcome board with my name written in white bold plated lettering.

Upon entering the green room, I introduced myself to the other lovely Interns, Keyondra, Jaelyn, Ja’Nia, and Abdulmalik. Orientation consisted of interns taking pictures for our badges to gain access to different areas around the building. Stephanie Cooke, our supervisor, gave us a private tour of the various departments in the studio, including the newsroom, editing suites, sales and promotions and the set of The Hampton Road Show — where Keyondra, Jaelyn and I would all be working.

I am excited to see where this opportunity will take me over the next few months. Stay tuned for more to come in future blogs!
