Even the clouds are important

One of the most interesting things that I’ve noticed since the beginning of my internship is the commotion any weather spectacle can cause. For example, there was a roll cloud on Feb. 5 and our WAVY facebook page went nuts. People were sending us photos, emailing us videos, you name it. Something as mundane as a cloud formation was newsworthy. I got the change to help put together the slideshow of all of the photos of that cloud formation and learned valuable skills when it came to citing and compiling photos. I’ll probably get the chance to create more photo slideshows but working on the roll cloud formation was a valuable learning experience for me.

I’m really getting into the swing of things here at WAVY. Olympic coverage is the biggest thing on my plate but I have been able to work on holiday and popular culture themed posts as well. Each day I start by looking through every post that has to do with Olympic coverage. I check the formatting, pictures and links to make sure that everything works correctly. The layout is the biggest thing that I pay attention to. As an intern, this is valuable experience in my book. I get the change to interface with WordPress on a daily basis and practice my web posting skills. I am learning what a web-ready post looks like as well as learning how to catch content mistakes before they go out.

Some of the fun pieces that I’ve worked on this week all revolved around Valentine’s Day and the Virginia Beach restaurant week. I spent the majority of Wednesday building a post with an embedded table for the restaurant week post. Fact checking was an essential part of this project because I didn’t want to get caught with the wrong price on a dinner special. Valentine’s Day posting revolved around discounts as well. I got the chance to scour the internet for deals and learn what people are interested in on the day of love.
