VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man injured in a Virginia Beach house fire Tuesday intentionally set the blaze, officials say.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department said in a news release that crews from Norfolk and Virginia Beach responded to Whirlaway Road — in the Carolanne Farms section — around 10:30 p.m.

Officials said the first units on scene reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the first floor of a two-story house. A man was found sitting on the ground outside, suffering from burns to his face and smoke inhalation.

EMS took the man, 31-year old Ryan Pipkin, to a local hospital for treatment.

Firefighters got the flames under control in 12 minutes, and declared the fire out 30 minutes later. Investigators determined the house was intentionally set ablaze.

Pipkin was later charged with arson to an occupied dwelling. He is being held at Virginia Beach City Jail.
