PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Detectives are investigating a shooting in the 1000 block of Cherokee Road that left a teenager dead Sunday evening.

Dispatchers received the call at 5:42 p.m. for a gunshot wound victim, and officers located a male victim dead at the scene.

Initially police said the victim was an adult, but 10 On Your Side confirmed Monday that he was 17 years old. Police do not plan on releasing his name.

It was the second time in 2020 that police taped off parts of Cherokee Road.

“Two murders in two months,” said neighbor Emily Evans. “It was kind of surreal, you know, because you see stuff like this on TV. Then when you go outside to meet your husband coming home from work and you can’t even get out of your building. Everything is taped off, you can see the body in the car. There’s cops everywhere.”

Evans says she is worried, especially for the safety of her children.

“It’s bad enough the kids can’t play outside, then this scares them,” she said.

About 10 minutes after the first shooting, officers were also notified of a gunshot wound victim that walked into Maryview Hospital. That victim, police say, is also 17 years old. He is expected to survive.

Police say it is unknown if the two incidents are related.

The investigation remains ongoing.
