NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk woman has pleaded guilty to murder in the death of her 11-year-old daughter.

Latoya Monique Smith, 33, was arrested in May along with her boyfriend, 43-year-old Demont James Harris, after 11-year-old Heaven Watkins died at a home on Balview Avenue.

An official with the Office of the Norfolk Medical Examiner later determined Watkins was killed by blunt force trauma to the head and torso.

Both Harris and Smith were charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse/neglect.

Smith pleaded guilty to the charges on Wednesday, and is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 11, 2019.

Harris is expected to enter a guilty plea on Nov. 8.
