NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A city official confirms a scooter company owes Norfolk more than $93,300.
Bird’s sudden appearance in Norfolk in late-August, without city approval, prompted officials to round-up dozens of scooters.
Norfolk spokesperson Lori Crouch confirms the city has collected a total of 560 scooters since then. Crouch said it costs the city $35 to retrieve each scooter and $5 per scooter, per day, to store them.
The company’s website states that Bird is an “electric vehicle sharing” app where you can find and unlock a scooter and start riding at $1.
The service is similar to the Pace bike share that launched in Norfolk earlier this year.
Bird’s website lists Arlington, Richmond and Virginia Beach as places where scooters are available in Virginia — but not Norfolk.
