HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man is dead following a double shooting on Newport News Avenue in Hampton Monday, Hampton Police said. The deceased victim has been identified as Leron Christian, a 42-year-old Hampton man.

Around 5:12 p.m., Hampton Police got a call for a shooting in the 400 block of Newport News Avenue, and when officers arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds inside two different residences, police said.

The Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue determined one of the men had life-threatening injuries, and the other non life-threatening. Both were taken to a local hospital, where Christian died.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that two neighbors got into a verbal argument, and after exchanging words, both shot at each other.

10 On Your Side’s Markeshia Jackson spoke with neighbors who said they hate that an argument went this far.

“It was several hours ago,” one neighbor said. “I was in the backyard cutting wood, I went and told my niece to go get my nephews from down the street playing basketball by the park. So, I said ‘bring them from over there because I heard some shots and that doesn’t sound like no firecrackers to me.'”

The neighbor also said he is thinking of the victim’s family, as he knows the impact of gun violence himself, saying that his nephews lost their father to gun violence.

The Hampton Police Division’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting.
