JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – The James City County Fire Department is investigating an underground fire at the Williamsburg Premium Outlets off of Richmond Road.
The JCC Fire Department said they were dispatched around 9 a.m. Saturday to the Premium Outlets for a possible underground fire.
Units arrived to find the parking lot behind the stores partially collapsed and an active fire in the underground stormwater detention facility. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
There is a natural gas line near the fire but Virginia Natural Gas is on scene and has secured the line. Electricity in the affected area has been disconnected.
Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Office of Pollution Response, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are also on-site.
VDEM and DEQ have been onsite since Saturday. VDEM has been monitoring the air quality. It has been within normal ranges consistent with a fire.
The EPA is conducting additional testing and will share the results once they are available.
Out of an abundance of caution, and due to smoke, some area businesses were evacuated.
As of 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, the James City County Fire Department said this fire continues to burn, and smoke has increased.
On Monday morning, 10 On Your Side’s Raven Payne was at the scene, where she said the smell of smoke was no longer there.
The department said that firefighters are still on the scene and are working to cool down the area to keep the smoke down as much as possible.
Nearby businesses have reopened and the cemetery near the Premium Outlets is not in danger.
They warned the public should consider avoiding the area if they have respiratory problems.
