SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two people were injured, including a child, Friday morning after a vehicle crossed a railroad track on Bank Street in Suffolk and was struck by a train while the stop arm was coming down, police said.
Suffolk Police said charges are pending for the driver of the vehicle.
Just after 9:30 a.m., Suffolk Police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Bank Street in reference to the crash, officials said.
Officers arrived to the scene and found a woman suffering from minor injuries, and a child suffering from non life-threatening injuries. The child was transferred to a local hospital and is expected to be OK.
Photos from the scene show heavy rear-end damage to the vehicle.
After an investigation, police determined that the driver of the vehicle crossed the railroad track while the crossing arms were in the process of coming down. That’s when the backside of the vehicle was struck by the train.
The railroad crossing located at Bank Street and Moore Avenue was temporarily shut down as a result of the incident, but has since reopened.
Raphael Brown, Suffolk’s Fire and Rescue Operations Battalion Chief for C Shift Battalion 1, was among the first responders to the scene.
“Anytime you’re at a railroad crossing, always stop,” Brown said, “These trains come through here in the speeds of excess of 60 mph. It’s hard to time how quick that train will get to the intersection.”
Brown said the Amtrak train was heading to Washington, D.C. There were no injuries to the train driver or those aboard.
