NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk woman died following a hit-and-run crash on Wilson Road Tuesday night, Norfolk Police said.

Amanda A. Godfrey, 40, of Norfolk died in a crash in the 1600 block of Wilson Road, with the call coming in at 10:11 p.m., police said. Neighbors said they saw a body laying on the street in front of their homes.

“I just heard, like, a hit, but no screaming,” said Jose Vazquez. “You hear like a tire, not really too much noise. But then I saw a body laying on the side, and the car sped off.”

Neighbor Rameik Johnson said, “Me and my wife were watching television and we seen the police lights, the blue and reds and we came to check the door. And that’s what we seen approximately right where those tire marks are at was where her body was laid out.”

The investigation found the woman was hit by a car that left the scene.

“They had a defibrillator strapped to her chest,” Johnson said. “When I came out, [the] ambulance was just arriving. They hopped out the back with a stretcher.”

Johnson said a woman’s name was being called out by another person.

“To me, it seemed like it was a relative,” Johnson said. “He was yelling. It sound like he was yelling her name, Amanda.”

Godfrey died on the scene. This is an ongoing investigation and police have not released a motive.

Johnson said Wilson Road is just too busy, and he’s had enough.

“The speeding is a big issue,” he said. “The semi-trucks are not allowed to come down here, but they still come down. We have the dirt bikes that come up and down, sometime make a lot of racket. The main reason we’re moving was cause this road has gotten a lot more busy, primarily, I believe, with the shipping and receiving facility that’s right here at the border of Norfolk and Chesapeake. But the traffic has definitely picked up on this road in the last two years or so.”

Police ask that if anyone knows anything about the crash to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
