NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY)– Police in Newport News are investigating a crash that left a person dead.

Officers were called to the intersection of Jefferson Ave. and Mercury Blvd. at 12:12 a.m. for the report of a crash. The crash closed off the intersection for hours while crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes have since reopened.

After investigating, it was revealed a Nissan Versa failed to yield at a red light and struck a Chrysler 200 as it went through a green light southbound on Jefferson Ave.

The driver of the Chrysler died at the scene. The other driver has non life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said there were two other vehicles involved, with no one reportedly hurt.

Police have not yet released the name of the driver killed in the crash.

10 On Your Side’s Raven Payne spoke with a driver about the incident.

“That’s horrible, it’s horrible,” he said. “Yeah, [I see people speeding] coming off that bridge, yeah.”

Another driver reacted to the traffic she sat in as a result of the crash.

“It is common yes that traffic is backed up whether it’s an accident or just the flow of traffic.”

The incident remains under investigation.
