NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — From a makeshift kitchen inside a small hotel room, Reo Jones has figured out how to feed five children. She uses a hot plate, a microwave oven, disposable plates and plastic bags for popcorn treats.
A three-year-old, a one-year-old, and four-year-old twins greeted 10 On Your Side’s Regina Mobley at the door with a big hugs around her knees and ankles.
Their lives have been turned upside down since they were evicted from an apartment in the Norview section of Norfolk a few months ago. It was shared by three generations, including 52-year-old Archie Jones, who was arrested late last month and charged with murder after the stabbing death of 35-year-old Brandon Rhodes outside the Tinee Giant convenience store.
“We have had several setbacks where we really was trying to maintain and keep focus, basically,” said the suspect’s sister, Gail Jones. “I start noticing the changes in my little brother when he was doing different things that I wasn’t used to. So with that being said, I kind of watched him.”
Family members said Archie Jones had mental health disorders, and at times, his behavior was threatening.
“I know he has bipolar schizophrenic personality disorder,” Gail Jones said. “He may have several other ones, but those are the ones that I’m aware of.”
While Archie Jones remains behind bars, the rest of the family relies on social programs and donations from a church.
“The crisis hotline told me because I’m paying out of pocket for hotels. that is not [its] first priority to help me and my five children … until we’re sleeping in a car or we had nowhere to go that night that they will assist us,” said the suspect’s niece, Reo Jones.
The family told 10 On Your Side that they are on a waitlist for housing with the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The Jones family offered condolences to the victim’s family.
Archie Jones is due in court Nov. 20.
