CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A girl at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake was arrested after another student reported a person with a loaded gun Monday, officials said, but some parents are unhappy with how they found out about the incident.

Police responded and escorted the girl off school property, and she was immediately taken into custody and transported to Juvenile Intake, where charges are pending.

Another student reportedly saw the individual with a handgun and immediately told an administrator.

The voice message sent to parents was as follows:

Good morning, this is Brian Haughinberry, Principal of Grassfield High School, with an important message for our parents and guardians.

Earlier this morning, a student was taken into police custody after school administrators found the student in possession of a loaded firearm. I want to assure you that at no time were any threats made to students or staff during this incident.

I want to commend the student who did the right thing by reporting this matter to a trusted adult. Today’s response is a strong example of our “see something, say something” message in action.

I also want to remind everyone that weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on school grounds, and violations result in serious consequences. In this case, immediate disciplinary action was taken, and the incident has been referred to the Chesapeake Police Department for further investigation. Chesapeake Public Schools is committed to prosecuting anyone who jeopardizes the safety of our schools to the fullest extent of the law.

I encourage you to use this incident as an opportunity to have an open conversation with your child about what is not permitted on school property. Remind them to promptly report any safety concerns to an adult. By working together, we can ensure the continued safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Parents are unhappy with the way the school informed them, however.

“There was a threat inside your building and you gave parents the warm fuzzy that everything was OK and it wasn’t,” said a concerned parent. “And you’re telling parents, like that’s the official stance of the school board is: there was not a threat when there was a child with a loaded gun and intent inside the building.”

Parents believe there was a social media post circulating with a warning that a girl was going to bring a gun to school. Police say another student reported the teen having a loaded gun in school.

Parents believe when the suspect left, she made a comment that has parents concerned to take their kids back to school.

“You know, when she was handcuffed, they were being taken out and told, ‘watch what my friends will do,'” said a concerned parent. “And we’re getting the kids, we’re hearing this and my kids are just wandering the school like normal day. That’s crazy. Then, you know, your kids are shaken and scared, thinking that there’s a school shooting.”

It is this parents hope that the school changes their safety protocols.

“We’ve got to put a focus on safety and education,” a concerned parent said. “Situation’s not under control at no time, like if there was a terrorist inside the building, would we be like, ‘we got them’ and just go about our day? Like, no way. Why would you not check every student … especially if any inclination was made to saying there’s potentially other kids involved? Like, why would you not make sure safety takes place first and then multiple lockdowns throughout the day.”
