NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is dead after a shooting in Newport News Saturday evening. The victim in the homicide was identified as Adrian Mary Dillard, a 35-year-old Hampton woman.
At approximately 8:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 12000 block of Nettles Drive in reference to the shooting.
10 On Your Side spoke to a woman off camera who said, “I heard two different rounds of what sounded like rapid fire gunshots. So, I called 911 and said, ‘I believe I heard gunshots across the street over at the apartment on Nettles.’ And I asked if they were getting calls, and he said yes.”
Following the call, the woman heard noise outside her home.
“I heard screaming and some commotion. I stuck my head out the door and I heard a male voice. I couldn’t see anybody, but I heard a male voice that said, ‘I will kill everybody here.’ That was about 3 minutes later. And I called 911 again to let them know that information because I didn’t know – I didn’t know what the cause of this disturbance was,” she said
Upon arrival, Dillard was located in a car with at least one visible gunshot wound.
She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The woman told 10 On Your Side the area is usually quiet.
“I didn’t know it was somebody that just wanted to shoot a bunch of people in the apartment complex. I didn’t know what that meant, and I didn’t know who everyone was. So, I was very concerned. There’s a lot of children around here between the apartments and our, you know, the adjoining neighborhood and the bus stop,” she said.
There is no suspect information available at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.
