NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – This weekend is full of fun events in Norfolk, but those events can bring in a lot of traffic. Here’s a look at where you can expect slow downs.
First, the NEON Festival will light up the Downtown arts district from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Expect road closures around Granby Street, Olney Road, and Monticello Avenue. Parking will be limited, but there are several garages nearby, including the Harrison Opera House and Scope Arena garages.
The Stockley Gardens Arts Festival is Saturday and Sunday in Ghent. The two-day event will feature more than 125 artists from across the U.S. and even overseas. Streets surrounding Stockley Gardens, like Olney Road and Colley Avenue, will see heavy foot traffic and parking may be tough. Festival-goers are encouraged to use the York Street garage.
The city issued a traffic advisory for Saturday, Oct. 19 because of Old Dominion University’s homecoming parade. Southbound traffic on Hampton Blvd. will be reduced to one lane to accommodate the parade, which is happening from 11 a.m. – noon, followed by the homecoming game against Texas State. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. It’s expected to bring thousands of fans to the Norfolk campus. You can park in ODU garages, but it’s recommended you get there early or use rideshare services to avoid delays.
That’s not all!
The Norfolk Greek Fest Express is also happening this weekend. If history repeats itself, the craving for homemade gyros to spanakopita to baklava, could back up traffic onto Granby Street. This drive-thru only event is from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17-19.
The Norfolk Admirals have a game against the Adirondack Friday night at the Scope Arena downtown.
It’s also the 36th annual Town Point Park Fall wine festival this weekend. The festival is scheduled to take place on Oct. 19-20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Town Point Park, along Waterside Drive. Guests will have the opportunity to sample over 200 of Virginia’s fine wines from wineries like Chateau Morrisette, Mermaid Winery and Cobbler Mountain Cider.
