NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk hosted a block party Monday, with the take home favors connecting people to community resources.
The Department of Human services hosted the event, complete with music, dancing and games.
People connected with all kinds of community partners offering things like fresh foods, legal services, mental health care, discount rides on HRT and more.
“I like the entrepreneur table that they help you with,” party participant Shantel Ladson said. “Starting your business up in the TCC for the classes and stuff like that for people, I didn’t know that they had certain classes.”
Community resources can change lives.
“Me, as being a homeless person all at a time in my life needed these resources as well,” said A.C. Arthur, there representing the Salvation Army. “So I’m thankful and grateful to God not only for Salvation Army being here, but for all the other community agencies.”
If you missed this party don’t worry. The DHS street team goes into neighborhoods every Thursday.
“We go out into the community and we provide services in case individuals can’t reach us at our office,” said Mallory Evans, Norfolk DHS community engagement street team coordinator. “So sometimes people don’t have vehicles or they’re working at the time we’re in our office is open. So by meeting them where they are in the community, it helps them to connect them to services.”
This coming Thursday they’ll be at Diggs Town Park.
