On Tuesday, around 11:25 p.m., Elizabeth City police responded to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in response to a fire. An eyewitness reported seeing a woman setting fire to a bush before she fled. The suspect was identified as Carrietta Spence.

Officers found Spence a few blocks away where she was taken into custody without incident. She is charged with injury to real property and burning of churches and certain other religious buildings.

Spence was taken to Albemarle District Jail on a $10,000 bond. Her first appearance in court is expected on Thursday.
