PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A widespread outage of Spectrum internet and cable services is affecting tens of thousands of customers in several states impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Helene, including parts of the Hampton Roads and Western Tidewater regions.
A spokesperson for Spectrum told 10 On Your Side that the company’s network lines at its regional data center in Spartanburg, South Carolina were damaged during Hurricane Helene.
“Our technical teams are onsite working to restore services as quickly as possible for those impacted customers,” the spokesperson stated. “We are communicating with impacted customers about the service interruption and that our restoration process is underway. We apologize for the service interruption.”
In instances where both power and cable lines are down, Spectrum often follows energy companies into neighborhoods to restore cable service as soon as power is restored, according to the spokesperson.
Saturday morning, the Suffolk Police Department stated in a post on X that the outage was affecting non-emergency phone lines. The department advised residents to call 757-925-1446 for any non-emergency matter. However, residents were asked not to call the number for updates on the Spectrum outage. Just before 2 p.m., Saturday a spokesperson from the City of Suffolk said that service had been restored.
According to the town of Smithfield, damage to the South Carolina hub caused widespread outages across the southeastern U.S.
As of late Friday evening, DownDetector.com was still indicating an active outage throughout Hampton Roads, as well as Isle of Wight County, Southampton County and Suffolk.
A number of people took to social media to note the outage.
