CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Being a reliable, consistent piece to anything in this world is so important for overall success, and Oscar Smith’s senior running back BJ Nesbit is providing that stability week-in and week-out for the Tigers.
“He’s blossomed not only into a great player but a great leader,” said Oscar Smith head coach Chris Scott. “Being able to leave your mark in this chapter is very important, and he’s doing that.”
Since beginning his Oscar Smith career last season, the back has totaled more than 1,400 yards on the ground. He’s already started out his 2024 campaign as strong as any other RB1 in the state, with two straight 100+ yard performances to go with four rushing touchdowns, justifying the seven Division I offers he has received.
He attributes it all to honoring the legacy of Oscar Smith, a program he’s grateful for since coming in 2023.
“When we put the S on, it means straight business,” Nesbit said. “We go to war every time,” adding that “it would mean a lot. I’ve never gotten a state championship. That would be a proud moment in my life for sure. … [Our potential is] through the roof. We take 1% everyday and keep getting better.”
Said Scott: “The cliché is sky’s the limit. He defines that for himself. … He’s just getting started. There’s a lot more to see not only this season but in seasons to come.”
Nesbit and the undefeated Tigers take on Great Bridge at 7 p.m. Friday.
