NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – In 2024, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer.
1 in 8 men diagnosed will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their life.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. During the month, Riverside Health is raising awareness and hosting free screenings around Hampton Roads.
Amanda Norman, Nurse Practitioner and Marina Moore, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from Riverside Urology Specialists joined the Digital Desk to discuss prostate cancer and the importance of screenings. Watch the Digital Desk segment in the video player on this page.
“When it’s detected early the prognosis can really be great,” said Norman. “Our patients can live normal, happy lives after treatment.”
There are several types of tests for early detection.
At age 50, Moore said men are recommended to start having prostate exams. The screening age could be earlier, if the patient had a higher risk.
The digital rectal exam is performed by a physician. It helps to identify changes in size or texture.
There is also the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. The test measures the level of PSA in a blood sample to help detect prostate cancer.
During the month of September, Riverside Health will offer free prostate cancer screenings for the community. Take a look at the flyer, below.
