CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash on I-64 Sunday night that resulted in a fatality.
According to officials, just before 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the westbound express lanes of I-64, near George Washington Highway, for reports of a two-vehicle crash.
An investigation revealed an 81-year-old male, later identified as John Francis Duff, was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling westbound down the express lanes when he ran off the roadway and struck a jersey wall. Duff then exited his vehicle after his car spun around.
Shortly after exiting the vehicle, a 2019 Dodge Challenger was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway, striking Duff and the Chevrolet Malibu.
Police said the Duff was then transferred to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Dodge Challenger, later identified as 19-year-old Dahnna Renita Meno, who was traveling with four passengers at the time, was charged with reckless driving. Further charges are pending, according to police.
Meno and her passengers did not report any injuries.
