NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 33-year-old woman who was being held at the Norfolk City Jail died over the weekend, authorities say.
The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office says it’s believed that Saleia M. Gregory suffered a medical emergency on Saturday, August 10. She was initially treated by medical staff at the jail before being taken to a local hospital, where she later died hours later.
Gregory had been in the Norfolk City Jail since June 27, the sheriff’s office says. Court records show she had assault and battery and trespassing charges in Norfolk.
The sheriff’s office didn’t expand on what the medical emergency may have been, but say no foul play is suspected and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death. The incident was also reported to the Virginia Department of Corrections.
“Sheriff Joe Baron and all of us at the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office send our condolences to the family of Ms. Gregory,” a statement from the sheriff’s office reads. “The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing an environment of life, health, and safety for those in our custody and their well-being is always our top concern.”
