DELTAVILLE, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Marine Police officers recovered the body of a man who fell overboard and rescued a woman from the boat in Deltaville.

It happened around 3:34 p.m. Sunday when Marine police were dispatched to the waters near Stingray Point Light. Officers arrived on the scene to find a white, 17-foot Key West boat with a woman aboard. The woman, identified as Lisa Jane Flowers, directed the rescue team to a man, identified as the boat’s owner Steven Drew Higginbotham, face down in the water and entangled in the fishing line.

A storm system approaching from the southwest and 15 to 20 knot winds complicated the rescue effort, according to Virginia Marine police.

The rescue team removed Flowers, who appeared to be suffering from sea sickness and general distress, from the boat for her safety. She was transported to Regatta Point Yachting Center where she was evaluated by Middlesex EMS and released.

Flowers later told police she had been operating the boat while Higginbotham was fishing for Spanish mackerel. After Higginbotham signaled a bite, she looked back and discovered he was in the water.

Flowers, who cannot swim and has limited boating experience, said she made the emergency call, threw Higginbotham a life jacket and used fishing poles to try to reach him as he struggled to get back aboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard towed the Key West boat back to Regatta Point Yachting Center, where it was secured.

In a news release, Virginia Marine Police extended their condolences to the Higginbotham family.
