NEWPORT NEWS, Va.(WAVY)– Police in Newport News are investigating a shooting that left a teen with life-threatening injuries.

According to police, officers were called to the 7-Eleven at the intersection of Colony Rd & Warwick Blvd at 2:39 a.m. for the report of a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they located a 17-year-old boy who had been shot outside the store.

He was taken to the hospital.

Nearly a dozen evidence markers were scattered down the middle of Colony Road Friday morning. Officers had a part of the street blocked off for hours as they searched for evidence.

The age of the victim shocked many people upon hearing the news. James McCollough remembers growing up in a community where something like this was practically unheard of.

“We was like a community. We never thought about shooting anyone,” McCollough said. “These murders, like this here, it’s a tragedy. I’m praying for our young people.”

Truck drivers on the morning shift were turned away from 7-Eleven while police were there. Store staff said they were not able to speak with 10 On Your Side about what happened. The building does have several security cameras outside.
