It’s been a great two weeks here at WAVY TV 10. I’ve learned so much already. I’ve been exposed to various roles and responsibilities within the station, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of the television business.
Studio Set Up
Setting up the studio is a fundamental part of my daily routine. This involved arranging cameras, lighting, and assigning mics to our guests. Understanding the different aspects of studio set up was important in creating a professional and visually appearing show.
Practice Being the Floor Director
As a floor director I am responsible for managing the studio during live broadcasts, including giving cues to anchors and making sure the production runs smoothly. I was given a headset to communicate with the producers and directors in the control room, which allowed me to listen to any signals they wanted me to pass on to our anchors.
Working the Teleprompter
Working the teleprompter was by far the most exciting part of the two weeks I have been at WAVY! I had to ensure that the script was displaying at a consistent speed that matched the anchors’ reading pace. This experience taught me how important a teleprompter is because they are in charge in maintaining the flow of the live broadcast. In addition, many times when we watch the news or sports show we don’t realize how important the behind-the-scenes people are because without them the show will not be successful.
Kitchen Segment
Lastly, I really enjoyed giving cues to the chef in the kitchen, guiding them through the segment to keep everything on schedule, guiding them through the segment to keep everything on schedule. A rewarding aspect of this role is the opportunity to interact with the chef and learn more about what inspired to pursue cooking and their restaurant. Often times after HRS is finished taping, we are fortunate to try some of their food samples they display on the show! It’s fascinating to try a variety of cuisines and dishes.
