PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A 33-year-old inmate at the troubled Hampton Roads Regional Jail died on Monday from an apparent suicide, jail officials announced. 

Jakub Michael Plucinski was pronounced dead just over 30 minutes after a security officer found Plucinski unresponsive around 1:55 p.m., according to a release from the jail. Assistant Superintendent Lt. Colonel Walz says lifesaving procedures were immediately started and continued until Portsmouth EMS crews arrived on scene, but Plucinski was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Plucinski arrived at the jail on March 9, 2018, to serve a 12-month sentence from Chesapeake for hit-and-run, an 8-month sentence from Norfolk for violation of probation and a 6-month sentence from Stafford County for violation of probation.

Walz says the the jail is conducting an administrative review and the Portsmouth Police Department was notified of Plucinski’s death. 

This marks the most recent death for the heavily scrutinized Portsmouth jail, which the Department of Justice recently claimed violates the constitutional rights of mentally ill and disabled prisoners. To read more about the DOJ’s two-year investigation into the HRRJ, click here.
