RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – Attorney General Jason Miyares announced Tuesday that Virginia is part of a $700 million nationwide settlement against Johnson & Johnson related to the company’s products that contained talc.

The popular baby powder and body powder products were sold for more than 100 years. As part of the lawsuit, J&J agreed to stop selling these products.

While this lawsuit targeted the deceptive marketing of the products, there are additional class actions alleging that talc causes serious health issues, including mesothelioma and ovarian cancer.

“Deceptive or false marketing of any kind of product will not be tolerated in the Commonwealth, but especially when those products could negatively impact a consumer’s health,” said Attorney General Miyares. “This settlement reflects the severity of the conduct, and our commitment to keeping consumer products safe for Virginians.”

Virginia will receive $21.1 million as part of the settlement. A total of 43 state attorneys general were part of the lawsuit. The settlement is pending judicial approval in the Richmond City Circuit Court.
