Excellent Educators is a WAVY-TV 10 initiative to celebrate local teachers who have gone above and beyond for their students and communities during the last academic year. These Excellent Educators were nominated by their school divisions. Congratulations to these educators for all of their hard work and accomplishments!
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Imagine not having to take a test in school until you are ready.
Looking back, it’s something we’d all likely wish we had the opportunity to do. But in Tiffany Britt’s 6th Grade science classroom at Western Branch Middle School, it’s now a reality.
Britt operates what is known as a “Modern Classroom,” and that’s not just because each student has their own tablet now.
Instead, it’s a place where Britt can work one-on-one with students rather than lecturing.
Most of Britt’s lessons are taught through videos used for homework. Then, during class time, she works one-on-one with students to make sure they understand the content.
“They cannot hide in my room. And I love that,” Britt said. “Like I absolutely love the fact that they cannot hide. I know exactly. Before I was traditionally teaching for 15 years it was, I didn’t know what they really technically really didn’t know until the unit tests. Before they set for their unit test for me this year, I know exactly where students still may probably stumble or struggle because all throughout the unit they had to have some sort of mastery check.”
Britt’s principal said her ability to step up and pilot the Modern Classroom is one of the many reasons she is an excellent educator.
Britt encourages other teachers looking to reignite their passion for teaching to give her method a try.
