PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Wednesday is the last day for people to file Virginia’s individual income taxes.

Residents of Virginia have until May 1 to submit their returns. An automatic six month extension will be applied for those who miss the filing deadline.

People are encouraged to file electronically, as it is typically processed within four weeks, compared to an over eight week process for mailed returns.

“We are , as always, encouraging you to file electronically and request a refund, if you have one coming, via direct deposit,” Tax Commissioner James J. Alex said.

Those who qualify will be eligible to file taxes for free, and no penalties or interest will apply to those who file by the deadline.

People who need to make a payment will be able to do so online using the link here.
