VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Fishing Pier reopened Sunday, months after a man crashed through its gates and drove over the edge.

10 On Your Side’s Ashley Knight confirmed the pier’s opening with D. Nachnani, a spokesperson for the family that owns the pier.

Nachnani told 10 On Your Side this is only a soft opening; the grand opening will be Friday, May 3, beginning at 10 a.m. He said Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer will be at the event.

Last month, Nachnani told WAVY the pier was scheduled to reopen April 1, but rainy weather caused setbacks with the reopening.

In January, a 57-year-old man crashed through the gate of the 14th Street Pier and drove over the edge.

Recovery of the vehicle was delayed for almost a week due to weather. When crews pulled the vehicle from the water, they found the 57-year-old man’s body inside.
