HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Rep. Bobby Scott has secured more than $1.3 million in funding for the Resilient Hampton initiative.
The funds will allow the city to acquire environmentally sensitive and flood prone properties to expand the area’s natural water storage capacity and ultimately reduce flood risk. That natural flood plain will help protect other homes and businesses.
“So by purchasing the property, you’re not only letting those subject to repeated flooding go buy houses in a better spot,” Scott said, “you save the taxpayer a lot of money.”
A check presentation ceremony took place Wednesday at 120 Briarwood Drive near Newmarket Creek, an area susceptible to flooding.
Mayor Donnie Tuck was also on hand for the event.
