PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police have identified a suspect after a man was shot and killed on Duke Street in Portsmouth on Thursday morning.

According to officials, police were notified of a shooting in the 1200 block of Duke Street at 10:16 a.m. and found the victim suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was identified on Friday as 33-year-old Timothy Scott Jenkins.

He’s about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 pounds, police say.

A block away, Reyatta Banks, who operates the Wesley Community Service Center, said on Thursday “I think it all breaks my heart. I’m just tearing up, just even thinking about it.”

Detectives went door-to-door looking for leads in hopes Thursday’s killing would not join the collection of unsolved cases.

“I heard, like, a few, like five gunshots,” said Ricardo Riddick. “Bah, bah, bah, bah, bah, bah, bah, bah. I came to the balcony door and looked out, so then I see the dude laying on the ground. … It looked like he was there with blood all over him.”

In a neighborhood numbed by crime, life goes on. Residents would line up for free food. They bring in with them evidence of all of the problems that encompass this neighborhood.

“Yes, we see evidence of prostitution, drug users, homelessness, all in one day,” Banks said.

Jenkins is the 15th murder victim in Portsmouth this year.
