NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn held a press conference Thursday morning concerning the special grand jury report of Ebony Parker, the former assistant principal at Richneck Elementary school, where a 6-year-old boy shot his teacher more than a year ago.
The press conference comes one day after the Newport News special grand jury unsealed a 31 page report indicting the school’s former assistant principal.
“The eyes of the nation turned to Newport News, not because of the extraordinary leadership in the city, but because on Jan. 6, a 6-year-old took a gun from his mother’s house, went to Richneck Elementary School, pulled that gun out on his teacher, and shot her,” Gwynn stated.
According to the report, there was clear evidence the child had a gun, and that the administrators were not listening to the multiple concerns brought up prior to the shooting.
“I was appalled. My children go to that school,” Gwynn said. “The lapse was security, and anyone who read that report should say, how could this happen, how could these flaws, several parents said they had a fundraiser and they were denied and I think it’s appalling. Anybody in this room and in this city should be concerned about it.”
Gwynn told 10 On Your Side’s Andy Fox that the report speaks for itself, and that the evidence is crystal clear.
“I am also confident that the people who read the report were troubled when they read the section by the parents and guardians,” Gwynn said. “Because, as you know from the report, a number of parents of the students from Mrs. Zwerner’s classroom asked that their children be transferred to another school. And I’m sure that some of you thought that the only victims was Abby, but when you read that section, you knew there were other victims.”
Gwynn went on to state the report was made public to ensure everyone, from administrators to students, had a chance to be heard.
Parker attended an attorney advisement hearing at 10 a.m., where she stated she understood the eight charges against her.
