PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — “I’m going to stay out of trouble.”
That’s what 20-year-old Khatori Harper reportedly told his Portsmouth neighbor.
However, trouble found Harper Tuesday afternoon, as he was gunned down outside his home off Turnpike Road. A 14-year-old was also killed. There is currently no suspect information.
It happened just after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Seaboard Square Apartments near Turnpike Road. Residents there are pleading for answers, as the shooting there in a courtyard shattered any sense of community.
“I heard gunshots, and I went to my front door, and I seen a knock on my door,” one neighbor said. “I heard all the people screaming, and the mother says she needs help [so] I called 911.”
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man, 20-year-old Khatori Harper, and a 14-year-old with fatal gunshot wounds.
Harper, known as Tori, and the 14-year-old were still alive when another neighbor rushed to the scene.
“They definitely were still alive for about five, eight minutes afterwards before he passed away,” said neighbor Savion White. “It was like seeing the life drain out of them. It kind of drained my life into perspective because … it happens.”
A neighbor told 10 On Your Side that Tori, as he was called, recently returned home from jail and shared that he was going to stay out of trouble. Court records reveal a long history of trouble to include abduction, assault and concealed weapons charges.
The family of the 14-year-old who was killed is known to the founder of Stop the Violence 757, Monica Atkins.
“I showed up on the scene yesterday when I got the call to caress that grandmother,” Atkins said. “That 14-yaer-old has two siblings that are related to me. Trauma over trauma, layers of trauma, layers of trauma.”
There is concern an early spring of violence will lead to an early and deadly summer.
“The parents are scared of these kids … walking around the ‘hood,” a neighbor said. “There are ski masks on, Black on Black. … We need plenty of prayer.”
“It’s going to be a bloody summer,” Atkins said. “I pray to God that it don’t, ’cause words live.”
