NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — The case of child abuse against a nanny in Craven County is scheduled to begin on Wednesday in New Bern.
We originally covered this story in October of 2021 when Lauren Ashley Rowe was arrested on child abuse charges. The case garnered attention after parents Maxwell and Lauren Oglesby put the video of the alleged abuse on social media.
Court records show that Rowe faces a misdemeanor child abuse charge. Her trial is set for Wednesday morning at 9:30. The Oglesbys said that they just want to make sure what happened to their child doesn’t happen to anyone else.
According to the warrant for arrest, Rowe allegedly put food in her hand, then put the food into the child’s mouth. Afterward, she held her hand over the child’s mouth while the child was kicking and screaming.
Mother Lauren Oglesby said she met Rowe in an online mom’s group. She said that the nanny came highly recommended from other mothers. Lauren added that Rowe babysat the child, Declan, and his siblings several times before the parents started noticing bruises on Declan’s arms. This is what prompted Lauren to start checking her nanny cameras.
“I was just sitting there watching it, but then she started restraining him and covering his mouth, and at that point, I’m showing Max, freaking out, and I’m like Max I don’t know what’s going on, what do we do?” said Lauren. “My main thought that was going through my head was I have to get home and I have to get him away from her, I was just super scared and my heart hurt for him.”
Court records also say that conditions for Rowe’s release include not being allowed to nanny, babysit or be unsupervised around children under 16 while the case is still pending. Rowe is also not allowed to contact the victim or the victim’s family.
